Anger Tip # 13- Remind Self That Things Don’t Have To Go Your Way

Betty was a 23 year old model who attended our anger management classes because, in her own words,” I was spoiled rotten as a child. I always got my own way. Now, whenever my boyfriend doesn’t do what I want, I pout, stomp my feet, have a temper tantrum, and selfishly demand that he do it my way.”
While maturity-challenged, at least Betty was able to admit that she the problem. She also admitted that she had to find a way to change her thinking, or she would never be able to sustain a relationship for any period of time. Unfortunately, many other self-centered people are legends in their own minds. They convince themselves that they are the center of the universe which should basically revolve around their desires and needs.
If you think this way, you will generate tons of anger when frustrated over even common every-day things that occur in your life. You will be unable to share, to negotiate, to compromise, or to truly establish a close, loving, mutual relationship with others.
As an alternative, remind yourself (again and again, if needed) that things don’t necessarily HAVE to go your way. Yes, you would PREFER that they do, but they don’t HAVE to. For this to work, you not only have to tell yourself that things don’t have to always go your way; you must also actually BELIEVE it.
Changing your self-talk like this can be a powerful weapon in your arsenal of anger management tools. After all, things happen in your life for many reasons, many of which have nothing to do with you. As one anger management participant reminded us: “Some days you are the pigeon; other days you are the statue.”
Learning to truly accept this simple truth is truly a step toward self-development, maturity, and proper life perspective.
