Anger Tip # 19- Raise Your Mood before Dealing With Anger Trigger

15 year old Melissa was a typical adolescent who found she was always feeling insecure around her 45 year-old mother (Betsy) because she never knew how she would react to her demands and requests. For instance, one day she would ask her mother is she could spend the night with a girlfriend and would receive a permission to do so. The next week she would make the same request but this time receive an angry tirade in response consisting of what an ungrateful daughter she was, how lazy and messy she was around the house, and how her grades were not straight A’s in school.

Problem was, nothing in the external world had changed in a week. Melissa was basically the same girl, she was not more or less ungrateful than she was the week before, her room was the same in terms of messiness, and her grades had not changed.

Unfortunately, it was Betsy that had the problem. Her parenting decisions were largely based on her moods. When in a “high” mood, she was quite permissive with her daughter. However, when in a “low” mood, her perception of her daughter changed drastically, causing her to make different parenting decisions.
It is a known psychological fact that the level of your mood determines the perception you have of your world. In a high mood you see the world one way. In a low mood, you may see the exact same thing quite differently.
To better manage your anger, try to shift your mood before dealing with the anger or stress trigger or problem that is before you.
Typical ways to elevate your mood might include getting more rest, eating properly to adjust your blood sugar level, exercise, listening to mood elevating music, meditating, connecting with friends, or having a spiritual or religious experience.
The important thing to remember is to take time to elevate your mood before instantaneously reacting to an anger trigger at a time when your mood may be down. This step can say a lot of anguish for you and those around you and ensure that you are seeing things in their proper perspective.
Remember, too, that if you feel you have serious mood swings that are abnormal, you might want to consider a consultation with a mental health professional. Some mood swing problems are medically-based and outside of your control, requiring medication or other professional help.
